I thought Girnar would be a simple temple visit, consisting only of a few photos, trying local tea, and returning feeling spiritually fulfilled. I was, however, in for a pleasant surprise.
Very soon, I realised that Girnar is not a place you explore hurriedly. It’s not one of those trips where you’re consistently looking at your watch. The rolling hills and peaceful surroundings will encourage you to take your time.
So yes, this is the checklist I wish someone had handed me before going to Junagadh.
Remember to Start Early
My first mistake was thinking I could start anytime before lunch.
If you are going to climb, start as early as you can. That early moment when the town is just waking up, tea stalls are just properly opening, and the weather feels pleasant and relaxing.
And when the sun really shines out, it’s like every step is heavier. I arrived later than I should have, and after a while, the climb felt uncomfortable.
Therefore, starting early in the morning definitely feels better because there are fewer crowds. This silence is rare but comforting.
Don’t Carry Your Entire Life Around in a Bag
Girnar teaches you the value of packing light really fast. While your bag may feel normal at first, it is likely to hurt your shoulders after a few steps.”
Bring water. Bring a little snack, if necessary. Keep your phone charged up. Most probably, you won’t need more than that.
And most importantly, remember to wear shoes that are functional and not just aesthetically pleasing in photos.
Pick The Ropeway Before You Arrive
I made the classic mistake of thinking I would be fine without a plan.
However, if you’re going to climb, don't think of it as a short walk. If you want to take the ropeway, do remember to reach early and check the rush hours. Both are fine, as Girnar is an old, holy place that deserves your unhurried time and attention.
I saw old people, families, tourists, serious devotees and also people like me who did not feel very confident. Regardless, we all had our own pace. That alone made me feel better, because Girnar does not demand a fast-paced race to begin with.
Stay in a Convenient Place in Junagadh
This is one thing I would do better next time. I did not want adventure after Girnar. I didn't want to rush to another destination immediately. I simply wanted to rest and relax after my unforgettable experiences.
So when you book your stay, don’t just look at price. Make sure you get the location right. See how far it is from where you want to go. And most importantly, remember to read the reviews.
A comfortable stay in a convenient spot can make the whole trip feel more relaxed. I would suggest hotel booking online before the trip, especially if you are travelling on a weekend, holiday or during the busy season.
Keep Some Time ForJunagadh Too
Since most travellers talk only about Girnar, I also made Girnar the main thing in my mind. However, Junagadh too deserves your time.
It has old buildings, narrow streets, places to eat, tea stalls and relaxed surroundings. Not every travel memory needs to be a big viewpoint or a famous place. Sometimes it is just sitting with tea after a long climb, watching other people come back, tired but happy. I can remember that more vividly than some of the photos.
Do Not Make It Only About Photos
Take photos, obviously. I did too. There are some views too good to pass up. Some corners make you want to grab your phone. But if the whole point of a trip is to take pictures, Girnar loses something.
I stopped taking pictures for a while and just watched people climbing. Some enjoyed while some had a hard time. Some walked with such calmness that I wondered what they were thinking.
And that stuck with me. Girnar is beautiful, yes, but it is also tiring. And maybe that's why it feels different. You don’t just go there and enjoy it. You get to be a part of the experience step by step.
Final Thoughts: My GirnarTo Do List
Begin sooner than you usually do. Remember to pack light and decide about the ropeway before you get there. Also, stop to enjoy tea somewhere without turning the whole trip into a photo shoot.
And above all, don’t buy the idea that Girnar is yet another tourist point. It is busy in some parts, peaceful in others, and somehow still worth it.
I returned with sore legs, dusty shoes and a better story than I had hoped for.
Would I return? Yes. I’m starting before sunrise next time.
